For 30 years, Cape Town’s James Ferguson has worn his heart on his sleeve in support of his beloved Liverpool and is ready to continue for another 30 years.
James’ passion for Liverpool started when he was 10 and has escalated into a full-blown addiction that sees him never miss a game and has extended to his wardrobe with over 65 replica shirts now making up his personal shrine to his club.
‘I moved to Ireland from Canada when I was a kid and there was no ice hockey,’ says Ferguson. ‘It was all football, all the time and I chose Liverpool, who were playing some of their best football during those days.
‘I never intended to start collecting them but as my passion grew, so did the number of shirts in my cupboard.’
Ferguson is lucky enough to have attended matches at Anfield three times with the stand out memory being the win over Fulham with Steven Gerrard and Luis Suarez coming to the fore. While it’s hard to pick out a favourite, there is one jersey above the rest.
‘I wear them all and can remember who did what in games but my favourite is definitely the replica ’77-’78 jersey that I managed to get during one of my trips to England.’
Like many football mad fans in South Africa, the television is reserved strictly for watching his favourite team on weekends usually with one or two jerseys making an appearance during the game.
