Superbike fanatics will be revving in anticipation this weekend when round five of the 2022 SunBet ZX10R Masters Cup heads to the historic East London Racetrack on Saturday.
The SunBet ZX10R Masters Cup, which features standard Kawasaki ZX10R Superbikes with controlled Bridgestone tyres, makes a welcome appearance to the coastal town and a racetrack that once hosted the Formula One Grand Prix in a bygone era.
The Red Star Raceway near Delmas in Mpumalanga came alive in round four and changed the dynamics in the overall standings, which sets up an exciting tussle for top honours in 2022.
Both the SunBet Masters Cup ZX10 races went to Jayson Lamb (Tyremart ZX10), with Michael Smit (Kawasaki ZX10) claiming fastest lap and second spot in the two races, while Ronald Slamet (Vault Markets & True Vine) and Graeme van Breda (Stefanutti Stocks ZX10) took turns on the respective final podium place.
Slamet was in scintillating form in race two at Red Star Raceway and crossed the line in first place. However, Slamet ended up in seventh spot after being penalised 30 seconds for a jumpstart at the start of the race that saw him fly out of the blocks in front of Lamb and Van Breda and into a massive lead coming out of the first corner.
Lamb’s near faultless performance in race one and two of round four propelled him to the top of the overall standings with a clear 12-point gap ahead of defending champion Van Breda who has clawed his way back strongly after a shaky start to the 2022 season.
Hometown hero Van Breda’s battle with double second-placed Smit was one of the highlights at Red Star Raceway and it sets up proceedings nicely this weekend with the likes of Lamb, Slamet, David Enticott (Iron Horse Relocations), and Brian Bontekoning (Jaguar Power Products) all in the mix
The SunBet ZX10R Masters Cup forms part of the National Extreme Festival, with racers competing from provinces throughout South Africa with Seven categories, taking to the circuit.
Raceday promises to be as big as ever with some spectacular entertainment whether you are trackside or enjoying the fun in and around the circuit. Racing starts at 10 am and will be live-streamed throughout the day.
