Ukraine were unable to break down the German defence as the world champions got off to a winning start in Lyon.
German goalkeeper Manuel Neuer was in imperious form and was ably supported by his backline during their 2-0 win on Sunday.
Neuer pulled off two stunning saves in the first half to keep his side in front after Shkrodan Mustafi’s headed goal.
The German number one misplaced just two passes all evening as he helped build his side’s countless attacks on the night, according to SASoccermag’s Opta-powered match centre.
Besides Mustafi’s goal, fellow defender Jonas Hector also had a decent chance to score on the night but he scuffed his shot. Hector ended the night with 3 clearances and won 2 of his 3 duels against Ukraine’s attackers.
Jerome Boateng acrobatically cleared a very good chance from Ukraine in the first chance to keep his side in front; in all he made 5 clearances and proved to be a pillar upon which Germany built their win.
The last player in defence Benedikt Howedes made two clearances and won 50% of his duels. All in all, all five of Germany’s goal protectors performed well and laid the base for the midfield dynamos like Sami Khedira, Mesut Ozil and Toni Kroos to run rampant through the midfield.
