Franchise legend Tendai ‘Beast’ Mtawarira has hinted the Sharks aren’t done recruiting, as “there are things in the pipeline”.

Rohan Janse van Rensburg this week became the latest signing by the Durbanites, with fellow Springbok Eben Etzebeth arriving from Toulon in July.

They will link up with Bok skipper Siya Kolisi and fellow 2019 World Cup winner Bongi Mbonambi, who have established themselves since joining the coastal outfit.

Sbu Nkosi is leaving to join the Vodacom Bulls, but Mtawarira says Sharks CEO Eduard Coetzee is building a successful team which is attractive to the best talent available.

Speaking at the launch of the 2022 Champions Match, the retired 117-Test capped Bok, who now serves on the Sharks board after a record 159 Super Rugby appearances, said: “I meet every two or three weeks with Ed … I’m also an ambassador for the Sharks as one of the longest-serving members of the team.

“We want to build a championship team. We want to create a culture where players can thrive.

“Having a core group of senior players, especially guys that have been there and done that, who have won a World Cup like Siya, Bongi – that just sets the precedent among the youngsters.

“It takes a lot of time to build up to, but I think the owners have a big vision to take the Sharks onto a global platform and make the brand more appealing and they are on the way in doing that.

“Having big-name stars being part of that team, it just shows the credibility of the Sharks and what we are all about.

“We want to win trophies as you are judged by the amount of trophies that you have in the cabinet and that is what we build towards. All these players that have been signed; they are going to contribute to that vision.

“There are other things in the pipeline, which I am not allowed to divulge at the moment, but I think that everything that is being done at the Sharks is for the team to become a dominant force in world rugby.”
