The Hollywoodbets Sharks play their third match of the 2024 Carling Currie Cup on Friday when they host the Airlink Pumas at Hollywoodbets Kings Park.

This game is vital for both teams as they chase Currie Cup glory. Both have had tough starts to their respective campaigns, but after only two rounds, it’s still a case of finding their feet. While the Pumas are a cohesive side, together for some time, the Hollywoodbets Sharks are still building, while the Springboks have been in and out of the team.

Champions in 2022 and runners-up last year, the Pumas will be hurting after last week’s 75-21 loss at home to the Fidelity ADT Lions, having won away in Kimberley against the Suzuki Griquas in the first round.

Similarly, the Hollywoodbets Sharks come into this match off the back of two narrow losses, knowing that a full 80 performance will be the foundation to victory after going down to Griquas after leading handsomely at half-time last Friday.

Head coach JP Pietersen has had his hand forced this week for team selection as far as experienced personnel go, with his Springboks back with the national squad.

What this does translate to is more of the same for the bigger unions who use the Currie Cup competition as a breeding ground for youthful and exciting talent, and Pietersen’s team to take on the Pumas reflects the franchise’s investment into providing opportunities for the next generation of stars.

There is still some experience dotted amongst the forwards and backs to provide the calmness so important in the game, and they will guide the youngsters as they look to become permanent fixtures in the Black and White jersey in the years to come.

Friday evening’s match at Hollywoodbets Kings Park kicks off at 7pm.
