Former Springbok hooker Naka Drotské is in a critical condition in hospital.

Drotské was shot three times during an attempted robbery at his brother Tinus’ smallholding in Kameeldrift, outside of Pretoria, on the night of 29 November. He was rushed to hospital by ex-Bok prop Os du Randt, who had also been at the house.

After having an operation on his right arm and elbow, Drotské seemed to be recovering well. On 2 December, his wife Marzanne said he was ‘100%, apart from low blood pressure’.

However, Netwerk24 reports that the 47-year-old was checked into the Bloemfontein Mediclinic at 11pm on Tuesday night after feeling confused, and blood tests were done.

In a statement, hospital spokesperson Barbara Steenkamp said: ‘He had massive intestinal bleeding that led to hypovolemic shock. He is getting blood now. He has acute respiratory distress syndrome with a lung infection for which he is being sedated and ventilated. Various organs have been affected.’

On Wednesday afternoon, Drotské’s cousin Steven wrote on Facebook: ‘Please pray for Naka Drotské, he is fighting for his life, in critical condition in ICU. I truly believe our Heavenly Father has got some bigger plans for him and his future.’
