Fullback Aphelele Fassi is among the latest players to have extended their contracts at the Sharks until the end of the 2023 season.

This comes after announcements that a host of Springboks – including Sbu Nkosi, Makazole Mapimpi, Lukhanyo Am, Curwin Bosch and Sikhumbuzo Notshe – had all committed to the union among a spree of confirmed re-signings in Durban.

Since making a try-scoring senior debut in the 2018 Currie Cup, Fassi has forced his way into the Sharks lineup. The 22-year-old started all seven of the Sharks’ matches in the 2020 Super Rugby season, scoring three tries and was touted as a potential Springbok call-up before the season was halted by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Fassi’s signature means the Sharks have effectively managed to retain a core of the squad that was leading the Super Rugby standings.

The Sharks also confirmed that flank James Venter, who joined the side from the Lions for the 2020 season, has signed on until 2023. The 24-year-old is making a cracking start to his career in Durban, impressive with his high work rate on defence and proving to be a menace at the breakdown.

25-year-old loosehead prop Mzamo Majola has also extended his contract until 2023, while lock Ruben van Heerden, who joined the side from the Vodacom Bulls, has signed a new contract until 2022.
