Assistant coach Deon Davids has confirmed that wing Sbu Nkosi is yet to link up with the Springboks in Cardiff and will probably miss the opening Test of the November tour against Wales on Saturday.

Sunday newspaper Rapport reported that issues with Nkosi’s passport and visa meant he was unable to join the Springboks when the team embarked on their pre-tour camp in France last week.

Nkosi reportedly had a valid passport, but too few pages blank pages in it to be able to apply for a visa. As a result, he had to apply for a new passport before he could apply for his Schengen visa.

Davids confirmed on Monday afternoon that Nkosi had yet to join the squad in Cardiff as the team prepares for the Test against Wayne Pivac’s Wales.

“All the players have arrived. Some of the players have arrived a bit late after their games on Sunday,” Davids said, confirming that the UK- and France-based Boks have linked up with the squad.

“In terms of Sbu Nkosi, there are logistical issues that need clarifying and he will hopefully join us soon. He is not yet with the squad, but all the other players are with the squad.”

When asked whether a late arrival would rule Nkosi out of the Wales Test, Davids said it was a “possibility”.

“As I said, a lot of players came in a bit late and are still busy with their medical assessments. Obviously, his situation will also be discussed.”

Nkosi’s absence means that the Springboks could potentially be down to their third-choice right wing against Wales, as Cheslin Kolbe is still out with injury.

While Nkosi filled in effectively in the Rugby Championship, scoring a try and picking up a try assist in the two Tests against New Zealand, the door could open for Aphelele Fassi.

Fassi had a memorable Test debut against Georgia, but played only the one Test against Argentina in Gqeberha during the Rugby Championship.

“Obviously, we have guys like Aphelele Fassi,” Davids said when asked about South Africa’s options on the wing.

“We have also got a lot of versatile players, guys like Jesse [Kriel] that can play wing and centre. We have Lukhanyo Am, who has also assisted and bailed us out in that specific position.”

Springbok head coach Jacques Nienaber is expected to announce the match-day 23 to face Wales on Tuesday.
