Franco Smith believes Ulster flank Marcell Coetzee can contribute to the Springboks’ 2019 World Cup campaign. DYLAN JACK reports.

Since moving from the Sharks to Ulster in 2016, Coetzee has had his playing time curtailed by knee injuries that have prevented him from adding to his 28 Springbok caps.

However, the fit-again 27-year-old has made a storming start to the season, and particularly caught the eye in a Man of the Match display against the Kings in Port Elizabeth last Sunday.

Smith, whose Cheetahs side face Ulster on Friday in Bloemfontein, told SARugbymag.co.za that Coetzee could still add to the Springboks’ cause at the World Cup in Japan next year.

‘He is an excellent player. I got to know him last year on the Springbok tour. He is a class person and is finally injury free. Compliments to Ulster for sticking with him and he will want to repay them with his efforts on the field.

‘He is not even at full tilt and he is already influencing games. He is an excellent player and might be someone who can contribute to the South African campaign in the World Cup.’
