Veteran Springbok back Frans Steyn opened up about his future after steering the Cheetahs to a win over Western Province in the Currie Cup.
Steyn has been in sensational form for the Cheetahs this year as the Bloemfontein side has won all five their Currie Cup fixtures to date.
The 34-year-old was once again influential in helping the Cheetahs overcome a dogged Western Province on Wednesday afternoon, picking up an excellent assist for the winning try.
During the post-match media conference, the inevitable question over Steyn’s future came up.
“I am enjoying my rugby at present,” the 74-cap Springbok said. “I am enjoying it here at the Free State.
“My children are here in the school [in Bloemfontein]. My wife is happy and there are some nice people at the Free State.
“I still get angry on the field,” Steyn added later. “The day that I am no longer angry and accept mediocrity, average, that is the day I will stop.
“At the moment, I still get angry and want to compete. People still make me angry on the field. I am still OK.”
After a difficult 2021, where the Cheetahs lost a number of key players when they were excluded from the Vodacom United Rugby Championship, Steyn said things were looking up for the team in 2022.
“It was a very bad year for us,” Steyn said. “I truly feel there is something special happening here [in Bloemfontein].
“I am looking forward to seeing where the Free State can go in the future. Even if I am finished, I feel there is something great coming.”
