Blitzboks sink Canada

The Blitzboks eased to a comfortable 45-14 victory over Canada on day one of the London Sevens on Saturday.

Earlier in the day, the Springboks Sevens side bashed Japan 49-0 in their opening game and they backed up that result with another win, although the second game was a more daunting task against the gutsy Maple Leafs.

Coach Neil Powell’s men enjoyed a perfet start to the game when Werner Kok sped off down the right flank to put his side in front with a converted. There was another try for the Blitzboks, scored by rookie Kurt-Lee Arendse, but Canada responded well and hit back after going behind on both occasions.

Being level at the halfway mark seemed to have rankled the Blitzboks and they too their frustrations out on the poor Canadian defence in the second half.

South Africa would add five unanswered tries to their tally, with Kok completing his brace and captain Siviwe Soyizwapi, JC Pretorius, Impi Visser and Selvyn Davids all adding their names to the scorecard.

The Blitzboks take on Argentina at 6:32pm and are odds on favourites to come out of that clash as victors. If that is the case, South Africa will maintain their record as the only side to emerge as pool winners at every tournament throughout the season.
