The Lions failed to progress to the quarter-finals after succumbing to a humiliating 48-27 defeat to the playoff-bound Vodacom Bulls at Loftus on Saturday.
The result sees the confirms the make-up of the 2019 quarter-final lineup. The Crusaders will hosts the Highlanders, the Jaguares welcome the Chiefs, the Bulls will travel to the Hurricanes and the Sharks will face the Brumbies away.
As for the Lions, they narrowly miss out on a spot in the playoffs for the first time in four season.
The entertainment level of this match puts the earlier war of attrition between the Stormers and Sharks to shame. But while this game was every bit as enjoyable as the derby at Newlands was dismal; it could be said that while it was a great advert for free-flowing and innovative play, it was not for the art of defending.
They conceded a grand total six tries, but it was a game of two distinct halves as the breathless first stanza produced 50 points – and amazingly no scrums – and the second stanza only 25 points.
In a wild start to the game, the sides went blow for blow with two early tries before the Bulls pulled away on the scorecard. From the initial kick-off, the Bulls defence were picked off by a dazzling run from Aphiwe Dyantyi who found Hacjivah Dayimani. The No 8 raced down field and while he couldn’t outdo the chasing Rosko Specman for pace, he outmuscled him with a lethal hand-off to the fastest try of the season after just 15 seconds.
The Bulls responded with a seven-pointer to even things up, before the visitors regained the lead thanks to a penalty from Elton Jantjies. But they would soon relinquish the advantage as the Bulls became stronger, bolder and started to pay with more conviction.
The hosts proceeded to score three unanswered tries coupled with a three-pointer from Handre Pollard, while the Lions could only manage two extra penalties and a drop goal from Andries Coetzee to trail 31-19.
With a mountain to climb at the restart, the Lions enjoyed another dream start, adding eight points to their tally while the Bulls were down to 14. But that was where their comeback started and started.
With openside flan Marco van Staden dominating the breakdowns, the Bulls refused to let the Lions back into the contest. They chalked up three more tries to make sure the Lions don’t get within the desired seven-point losing region, which would have seen them advance.
