The Chiefs celebrate a try

The Chiefs hit back in the second stanza to complete an impressive 25-15 win over the Crusaders in Hamilton on Saturday. JON CARDINELLI reports.

The Chiefs made a statement in this fixture against the reigning champions. They were more clinical at the breakdown and aggressive on defence, and their ability to fight back after conceding two early tries spoke volumes for their character.

The Crusaders spent most of the first half camped deep in Chiefs territory. On the back of a strong forward drive, stand-in flyhalf David Havili found Sevu Reece twice, first with a well-weighted cross-kick and then with a long-spiralling pass.

At that stage, the Crusaders looked to be on course for a big bonus-point win.

The visitors continued to hammer away at the Chiefs’ line. The hosts were more than equal to the task, though, and managed to repel the Crusaders for the rest of the half. The 12-8 scoreline at the break flattered the Chiefs.
