Malcolm Marx will return to South Africa on Monday after suffering a groin injury in Wellington on Saturday.
The Lions hooker left the field in the ninth minute of the match against the Hurricanes, who went on to win 28-19.
Marx will go for scans to determine how long he is sidelined for.
‘It was a big setback for us to lose Malcolm so early in the match,’ said Lions coach Swys de Bruin. ‘He will definitely fly back [to South Africa] on Monday and will do his scans in Joburg.’
The Lions’ last match of their tour is against the Highlanders in Dunedin next Saturday, with Robbie Coetzee set to wear the No 2 jersey.
De Bruin confirmed that the Lions would not fly in a replacement for Marx.
