Sharks backline coach Dick Muir says he is astounded by the potential of talented youngster Curwin Bosch, writes CRAIG LEWIS.

Bosch has enjoyed a meteoric rise to prominence on the South African rugby scene over the past 18 months. The 20-year-old quickly established himself as a key member of the Sharks’ squad and he received his first Bok call-up last year.

Although Bosch has been widely celebrated as one of the brightest young stars in SA rugby, there is some concern over his defensive weaknesses, which were exposed at times in both Super Rugby and the Currie Cup last year.

It’s an area of his game that he will have been working on during the pre-season, and Muir reiterated to SARugbymag.co.za that the young flyhalf had all the attributes to become a complete all-round player.

‘I’m astounded by the potential Curwin possesses. He is a guy that is perhaps a little misunderstood, and people don’t always quite understand what great qualities he has. I particularly want to keep pushing his strengths and eliminating any weaknesses. His defence is something we are working on, but across the board I think we can improve that area of his game, and his attack.

‘What’s really impressed me about Curwin is his attitude and willingness to learn, coupled with his extensive skill-set,’ Muir added. ‘It’s a pleasure to work with players like that.’

Bosch can cover fullback, but is likely to continue to be considered primarily as a flyhalf this season, with the Sharks set to kick off their Super Rugby campaign against the Lions on 17 February.

The Sharks have bolstered their backline ahead of the 2018 season with the recruitment of winger Makazole Mapimpi and flyhalf Rob du Preez.

Muir said he was very excited by what these players could add to the Sharks’ attack.

‘They both bring something very different to the group, Mapimpi has phenomenal speed and communication, while he reads the game very well. Robert is already very experienced and has a good head on his shoulders; he has very few weaknesses. We’re blessed to have those two players joining us.’

Former Stormers utility back Leolin Zas is another new recruit for the Sharks, but he is set to miss the start of Super Rugby as he completes his rehabilitation from a long-term leg injury.

Lwazi Mvovo is likely to start at fullback and be one of the most experienced players in a youthful backline.

‘I worked with Lwazi years ago, and he has really come on in leaps and bounds. but it will need to be a collective effort from everybody when it comes to our attack,’ Muir commented. ‘It’s all about the quality ball provided by the forwards, and then ensuring the backline operates well as a cohesive unit to be most effective.’
