The Stormers run out at Ellis Park

Open discussions were held in Cape Town on Monday between the Stormers’ key role players to discuss some of the team’s struggles in Super Rugby.

According to Netwerk24, WP Rugby president Thelo Wakefield held a long meeting with director of rugby Gert Smal and head coach Robbie Fleck to address where things had gone wrong at various stages of the Stormers’ campaign.

The Stormers have most recently lost to the Lions and Bulls, while they went without a win on their tour to Australasia. The Cape-based side now lies in 11th place on the overall standings.

However, Wakefield said they had to consider the various injuries that had affected the team, with Springboks such as Eben Etzebeth, Bongi Mbonambi and Frans Malherbe having all been out of action with serious injuries.

‘It limits the coach’s choices and the players have to play each week. Wilco Louw is a good example of a player who does not get a rest. We are a very young team on paper and in key positions.’

Wakefield called for Stormers fans not to lose faith, and insisted that they were working on finding a solution to any problem areas.

‘It was a very long meeting without emotion. Some areas of the game have been identified that need serious attention.’
