Hooker Corné Fourie powers forward for the Lions

JON CARDINELLI picks a South African XV based on performances in round 15 of Super Rugby.

Let’s be honest, it wasn’t a great weekend for the four South African Super Rugby teams. The Sharks went down to the Jaguares in Argentina and the Bulls slumped to a disappointing loss to the Brumbies in Pretoria.

The Stormers were defeated by the Lions, but may have prevailed if not for two yellow cards and a red. The Lions weren’t at their best in the fixture at Newlands – which is why so few of their players feature in this week’s team.

REVIEW: Lions keep Jaguares at bay

The Lions have just one player in the back division this week. Selection was difficult in the sense that no player produced a consistent all-round performance.

There’s bound to be some debate around the No 7 position. The Sharks were outmuscled by the Jaguares in Buenos Aires, and yet Jean-Luc du Preez got through a mountain of work at the breakdown.

Franco Mostert was effective in the game played at Newlands, but only after the Stormers had a man sent to the sin bin.

That said, the Lions forwards produced some telling performances in that derby. Corné Fourie came off the bench to score two tries, while Lourens Erasmus has a big game with ball-in-hand.
