England coach Eddie Jones says Owen Farrell’s tackles will only become a problem if referees start penalising them.

At the end of the first half of England’s match against the Wallabies last Saturday, Farrell appeared to tackle Izack Rodda without the use of his arms, which prevented a try from being scored.

South African referee Jaco Peyper did not penalise Farrell or ask TMO Marius Jonker for a review of the tackle.

Wallabies coach Michael Cheika was incensed after the match and said his team should have been awarded a penalty try.

England, who were leading 13-10 at the time, went on to claim a 37-18 win.

Farrell put in a similar-looking tackle on André Esterhuizen at the end of England’s match against the Springboks, which they won 12-11, earlier this month.

Jones came out in support of his playmaker and captain after the Wallabies Test.

‘The referee said it was good. When he says it’s not good, we’ll have a chat about it,’ Jones said. ‘When you hit people hard, you place yourself at risk. And he hits people hard. I like people being hit hard.

‘Obviously we want to be within the laws. Owen doesn’t try to tackle outside of the laws so he’ll keep on working on that.’
