Captain Siya Kolisi says the Springboks must build on their historic 36-34 victory against the All Blacks in Wellington on Saturday.

The Boks claimed their first victory in New Zealand since 2009 in stunning fashion, fighting back from an early 12-point deficit to lead 31-17 early in the second half. They then withstood a fierce All Blacks onslaught late in the match and after the full-time hooter.

Kolisi said the Boks, who bounced back from two losses against Argentina and the Wallabies, will have to ensure that they improve on their excellent attacking and defensive effort against the world’s No 1-ranked team.

‘It was a great week for the boys. The way we carried ourselves this week and the way we believed in ourselves … I have no words, I can’t say much.

‘The main thing in the team is effort. We let ourselves down in the past couple of weeks, but we showed a little bit of what we can do [tonight]. Obviously, we haven’t achieved much yet, we must still make sure that we improve on what we started this week. All we had was each other, and the boys backed each other today.’

Kolisi credited coach Rassie Erasmus’ staff for not panicking after a very difficult couple of weeks.

‘It’s weird how we struggled in the scrum and set piece [last week]. Today, we didn’t do anything different, it was just the belief and backing the guy next to you.

‘I have to give credit to the coaching staff. They kept calm and did not put any pressure on us. It has been the same as how we have been preparing each and every week. They believed in us and backed us this week.

‘All we wanted to do today is give our best and give that 100% that we can for each other. We gave ourselves a chance and the boys did well but there is a lot more work to do. It has been a really good week.’
