Tinus Drotské has described the ‘chaos’ that ensued prior to his brother Naka being shot during a home invasion last Thursday night.

The former Bok hooker was at his brother’s house – on a smallholding in Kameeldrift, outside Pretoria – with Tinus’ three children and girlfriend Nadia Joost, as well as former Bok teammate Os du Randt, when four armed men barged in.

Tinus spoke with JacarandaFM‘s Martin Bester on Thursday morning to tell of the ordeal just as they were sitting down to eat dinner.

‘Suddenly, four armed robbers were standing in the opening by the sliding door, just shouting and screaming, spraying teargas and waving guns around in our faces…

‘It was just chaos all around, they were wearing balaclavas, they were so panicky and looked very disorganised, and my first thought was that they were going to open fire.’

Tinus said he got the impression that the intruders had been watching the family for some time, and were intent on first looking to ‘neutralise’ Du Randt.

Before this could happen, Naka charged the suspects, tackling them out of the house, during which time he was shot three times.

When the intruders opened fire on Naka, Du Randt ran outside and the suspects fled. He then rushed Drotské to hospital, where he was stabilised

‘I think he’s been through hell and back, with the reconstruction surgery on his elbow,’ Tinus said. ‘He was in theatre for about four and a half hours. I’ve seen the pictures of the arm, and it looks like Robocop.

‘The first shot, which Nadia saw, went through his stomach after they had the gun pressed right up against him. The other two shots could have come from the other robbers, but Naka never even fell down.’

Tinus went on to emotionally thank his brother for protecting his family.
