Mamelodi Sundowns froze when it mattered most as SuperSport United advanced on penalties to the semi-finals of the Telkom Knockout.
The Tshwane derby was sent into extra time as neither side could rattle the net during regulation play, with SuperSport plugging away despite a red card to Osmar Bhasera in the 61st minute.
SuperSport United coach Stuart Baxter lamented his side’s shocking start as Sundowns dominated proceedings. His counterpart Pitso Mosimane, however, was pleased until the penalty shootout.
The Brazilians looked to complete yet another win over their neighbours as they created chance after chance, but with no success. When the goal eventually did come in the second minute of extra time as Anthony Laffor found the net, it was ruled offside. SuperSport continued to cling to the goalless draw, which would allow them to enter the penalty lottery with a chance of an upset win.
Anthony Laffor took the first penalty, but failed by blasting high and wide of Ronwem Williams. Dean Furman, however, placed his effort expertly in the net corner. Ricardo Nascimento made it 1-1 before Clayton Daniels put SuperSport in front. Thabo Nthethe, on as extra-time subsitute, failed with a woeful effort which Williams palmed away before Aubrey Modiba stepped up.
The former Mpumalanga Black Aces starlet made it look easy as he beat Kennedy Mweene to put his side within touching distance of their first Tshwane derby since 2013.
Sibusiso Vilakazi tentatively walked into the box and struck timidly towards goal, allowing Williams all the time in the world to make the save and send his side into the last four of the lucrative cup competition.
Joining SuperSport in the last four, are Cape Town City who edged Baroka 4-3 with extra time needed to separate two PSL newcomers with the score level at 3-3 after 90 minutes.
