Former Bafana Bafana defender Matthew Booth believes coach Shakes Mashaba’s inconsistent selections are to blame for the team’s recent slump in form.

Booth, who captained South Africa’s side at the 2000 Olympic Games, believes Mashaba’s incessant fiddling with the side is hindering their performances.

Bafana fell short of qualification for the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations and ended their campaign with a disappointing stalemate against Mauritania on Friday.

Mashaba had succeeded in leading the side to Afcon back in 2015 but that success was short-lived as side failed to impress at the tournament.
Now, with Bafana set to face Egypt in the Nelson Mandela Challenge on Tuesday, many are predicting the match could be Mashaba’s last at the helm.

‘I think our main issue is consistency, by consistency I mean squad selection, we haven’t been able to get a consistent solid squad throughout the campaign and it is unsettling for the players,’ Booth told Goal.

‘Some of the selections, I have been left scratching my head wondering how that could be and I know for a fact that a lot of soccer fans have also been concerned, I think that has been the main issue for me.’

Booth concluded by pointing out that the complete set of players to have represented the country over the course of the Afcon qualifiers would produce a long list.

South Africa’s clash against Egypt will take place at the Orlando Stadium.
