Magesi FC goalkeeper Elvis Chipezeze says they were underdogs and no one expected them to beat Mamelodi Sundowns but was elated to see his side prevail.

The shot-stopper was named Man of the Match after helping his side secure a 2-1 victory over Sundowns in the Carling Knockout Cup final on Saturday.

Goals from Tshepo Kakora and Delano Abrahams cancelled out Iqraam Rayners’ opener as Magesi held on to secure the win and their first-ever top-flight trophy at the Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein.

Chipezeze admits his side went into the match with nothing to lose on top of having the tag of being underdogs.

“We knew they’ve got six players from Bafana Bafana, quality players. They’ve got [Lucas] Ribeiro, [Marcelo] Allende, [Peter] Shalulile, it’s a lot. But we just told ourselves that it’s a once off game, anything can happen. We have to just got there and make history,” Chipezeze told SuperSport TV after the game.

“Keep the low block for as long as we can, because they are under pressure you know. We came to the game knowing we’re the underdogs and no one expected us to win to be quite frank but credit must go the boys for the hard work throughout the week.

“The coach has been drilling us and sometimes you feel like giving up but these are the results and it paid off today.”
