In a round of shock results, Series A leaders Inter Milan have been knocked out of the Coppa Italia following a 2-1 last 16 home loss to Bologna on Wednesday night.
Defending champions Inter, who hold a four-point lead at the top of the Serie A table over second-placed Juventus, missed a host of chances in the game, including a penalty that was spurned by Lautaro Martinez, who saw his effort saved by Bologna keeper Federico Ravaglia.
They did open the scoring though through defender Carlos Augusto two minutes into extra-time after the game had finished 0-0 in the 90 minutes.
But late goals from Bologna’s Sam Beukema and Dan Ndoye sealed an extraordinary comeback win for the visitors, who had lost all eight previous Coppa Italia games against Inter.
The result follows the shock 4-0 loss for Serie A champions Napoli at home to unfancied Frosinone on Tuesday.
Bologna will face Fiorentina in the quarterfinals, while the winners of the last 16 tie between Atalanta and Sassuolo will take on AC Milan or Cagliari.
Lazio could have a local derby as they await the winner of the tie between Roma and Cremonese, while whoever wins between Juventus and Salernitana will meet Frosinone in the quarterfinals.
Juventus hold the record for the most Coppa Italia titles with 14, followed by Inter and Roma with nine each.
