Kaizer Chiefs interested in Mashaba

Kaizer Chiefs have confirmed their interest in former Mamelodi Sundowns defender Mzikayise Mashaba who is looking to land a contract with the club.

The Soweto giants are reportedly in desperate need of a left-back for the new season after parting ways with veteran defender Tsepo Masilela.

The club do have Siphosakhe Ntiya-Ntiya, Philani Zulu and Letlhogonolo Mirwa in that position, however, assistant coach Patrick Mabedi revealed that they need further strengthening in that department.

The 29-year-old versatile defender was reportedly spotted training at Naturena, which was later confirmed by Chiefs manager Bobby Motaung the club’s official website.

‘We have Mzi with us for training while the technical team have a look at him,’ stated Motaung.

‘We will see how it goes and a final decision on him will be made in due course.

‘We are looking at bolstering the left side of our play. We know what he can offer but he has been out of action for a while and with our new coach also coming in, we want to make informed decisions before finalising anything,’ Motaung concluded.

Mashaba parted ways with former club Sundowns in 2017 after joining from Bidvest Wits in 2013. Ill-discipline is said to have been the reason for the termination of Mashaba’s contract with the Chloorkop side.

The left-footed player made his top-flight debut in 2009 and has enjoyed stints with Platinum Stars, Free State Stars, Wits and Sundowns.

Chiefs do duty against Mashaba’s former team Sundowns in their first league match of the season at Loftus Versfeld Stadium.
