Kaizer Chiefs will look to kick-start their season when they take on Highlands Park on Wednesday evening while Maritzburg host SuperSport United and Golden Arrows travel to Free State Stars.
The Amakhosi have endured a frustrating start to the new season having lost their opening game in the league before being dumped out of the MTN8 in their following fixture.
Having been held to a 1-1 draw by Platinum Stars last match, Steve Komphela’s side will be desperate to get a win under their belt as they look to relieve some of the pressure that has been piling up following a stuttering second half of last season. In all, the side has won just once in their last 16 competitive matches.
Chiefs are expected to field George Lebese ahead of Edmore Chirambadare for the tie while the match could see the return of talismanic attacking midfielder Siphiwe Tshabalala. New playmaker Keagan Buchanan could also be poised to feature having recovered from a long term injury.
Highlands will be full of confidence heading into the tie having won the solitary game they have played this season against fellow promoted side Baroka. Highlands are likely to be counting on the experience of strikers Charlton Mashumba and last season’s golden boot winner Collins Mbesuma upfront, while goalkeeper Tapuwa Kapini will be hopeful of keeping out the lackluster Chiefs attack.
The Glamour Boys have not faced Highlands since way back in 1979 when the Amakhosi emerged victorious by a 5-3 scoreline in what was the two-legged final of the MainStay Cup.
Elsewhere on Wednesday, Free State Stars will be looking to pick up their first win of the season when they welcome Golden Arrows, while Maritzburg United will look to continue their good start at the expense of a stuttering SuperSport United.
