Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has admitted he faces a selection dilemma at the club following the recent high-quality performances of a host of players.
Klopp has numerous options across a wide range of positions within his side as the likes of Daniel Sturridge and talented Belgian Divock Origi have been reduced to infrequent appearances of late owing to the superb form of Roberto Firmino, Philippe Coutinho and Sadio Mane up front.
In midfield, Liverpool can call upon club captain Jordan Henderson to hold the midfield, while German international Emre Can and Netherlands star Gini Wijnaldum are in direct competition for the second slot.
The experienced Lucas Leiva is yet another option in defensive midfield, while the likes of Ragnar Klavan, Marko Grujic and Danny Ings have hardly had a chance to express themselves despite their exciting potential.
Finally, Liverpool have recently strengthened their goalkeeper options, as Loris Karius has been brought in to compete with established shot-stopper Simon Mignolet.
‘We decided to push ourselves from the inside, so we brought only quality in, we had only quality and kept only quality,’ Klopp explained.
‘When we have finished our squad, these are our boys, no doubt from my side, I trust everybody. Then they have to push themselves and then push each other with performances.’
The 49-year-old believes internal pressure forces players to be more clinical for fear of losing their place.
‘Of course you can play a bad pass and stay in the team, of course you can miss a chance and stay in the team, but you have to know that if you do a little bit less there’s someone else of your quality who is ready to come in.
‘The signings are not because this player isn’t good enough or this player isn’t good enough. It’s about having more options,’ he concluded.
Liverpool face Tottenham Hotspur in the EFL Cup on Tuesday, at Anfield.
Kick-off is at 20:45.
