Liverpool will face Fulham in the two-legged semifinals of the English League Cup following a comprehensive 5-1 thrashing of West Ham in their quarterfinal clash on Wednesday night.
Chelsea take on second-tier Middlesbrough in the semifinal, setting up a likely prospect of clash with The Reds in the February 25 final at Wembley.
The semi-final first legs will be played the week of Jan. 8, and the second legs beginning Jan. 22.
Liverpool clinched a record-19th semifinal berth in the competition with their hammering of The Hammers. Their nine League Cup titles are also a record.
Curtis Jones scored twice to with goals for Dominik Szoboszlai, Cody Gakpo and talisman Mohamed Salah at Anfield.
“The performance, the scoresheet, the result and the individual performances put together to make a team on the pitch,” manager Jurgen Klopp told Sky Sports. “The boys enjoyed it a lot, they worked hard but enjoyed it too with joyful football in moments. Nice to see.”
Gakpo was also delighted with his goal and the team performance.
“An important game to get through. We did our best and it was a good game in the end,” Gakpo said. “We have a good team, we have amazing players. The only thing we have to do is stay focused and stay together and keep working hard and then the quality will come out.”
