Highlands Park veteran striker Collins Mbesuma says he would like to break his goalscoring record in the Absa Premiership this season.

Zambian striker scored his first goal of the season on debut for the Lions of the North in their season opener against Baroka on Tuesday.

Mbesuma says he is confident of breaking his long-standing goalscoring record of 25 league goals under Allan Freese at Kaizer Chiefs.

‘It feels good to score. It’s for the team and supporters. Every season I target the Golden Boot. I want to break that record. Why not? It has been standing for many years,’ Mbesuma told the Daily Sun.

The 32-year-old believes if he keeps trying to break his record, he can help the team keep winning.

‘As long as I keep playing I will keep trying to break it. As a striker, I need to keep scoring so that the team can keep winning. Anything is possible,’ he said.

Last season, the veteran striker finished as the Absa Premierships top goalscorer after scoring 14 goals from 29 appearances for Mpumalanga Black Aces.

Highlands Park will now take on Kaizer Chiefs at the Makhulong Stadium in the Absa Premiership on Wednesday.

Kick-off is scheduled to get underway at 19:30.
