Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has clearly outlined the reasons for the lack of game time for summer recruit Henrikh Mkhitaryan.
Mkhitaryan joined from Borussia Dortmund with a reputation as one of the best attackers in Europe and. He entered the Premier League on the back of a stellar season in the Bundesliga where he was named the best player despite stiff competition from Bayern Munich’s stars.
Injuries have stunted his start at Old Trafford, but the Armenian international was in the squad that travelled to Sukru Saracoglu to face Fenerbahce.
Mkhitaryan was introduced in the second half with Manchester United two goals down, and like his teammates struggled to create any meaningful chances before Wayne Rooney’s consolation strike.
‘He has to do more,’ Mourinho told media after the loss. ‘It’s as simple as that.
‘We have big expectations at this club, lots of players for these positions and he has to play better than Mata, Lingard, Martial – he has to play better than them. It’s as simple as that.
‘Every manager wants to win matches, every manager in the world wants to play the players that he thinks can help the team more, and I’m no different.’
Manchester United will travel to Swansea City for a Premier League clash on Sunday.
