Orlando Pirates advanced to the 2016 Telkom KnockOut quarter-finals after overcoming Golden Arrows 2-1 on Sunday afternoon.
The Buccaneers had hosted Abafana Bes’thende in the Last-16 encounter, which was played at the Orlando Stadium in Johannesburg.
It took only ten minutes for Mpho Makola to fire Pirates into the lead with a thunderous drive which beat Arrows goalkeeper Maximilian Mbaeva to make it 1-0.
Tendai Ndoro set up his Pirates teammate Luvuyo Memela inside Arrows territory ten minutes later, but the latter was blocked by the defence and the ball cleared away.
In the 25th minute, Arrows winger Wayde Jooste controlled the ball brilliantly and played a good cross into the Pirates box which eluded his teammates.
Pirates keeper Brighton Mhlongo was called into action when he denied Danny Phiri to ensure that the first-half ended with the home side leading 1-0.
However, the visitors levelled matters a minute after the hour mark when Jooste beat Mhlongo with a beautiful free kick to make it 1-1 for Arrows.
It took only 12 minutes for Pirates to restore their lead through Memela. The winger beat Mbaeva with a powerful low shot, and Pirates led 2-1.
Despite Arrows’ late attacks, Mhlongo and his Pirates teammates stood firm at the back and, ultimately, they walked away 2-1 winners.
