Manchester City took a step towards the title after beating Tottenham Hotspur 3-1 in their Premier League encounter on Saturday evening at Wembley, writes DEAN WORKMAN.
Pep Guardiola’s men were looking to bounce back after suffering three defeats in a row while Mauricio Potchetino’s men were looking to keep up their good form with another victory.
City started the game on the front foot and nearly took the lead with just four minutes gone. Raheem Sterling’s cross found Leroy Sane, the German struck the ball on the volley but was denied by the upright.
Just as Spurs looked to be finding their feet the Citizens took the lead. A long ball over the top by Vincent Kompany found the run of Gabriel Jesus, the Brazilians controlled the ball and arrowed his shot into the bottom corner. 1-0 to the Champions elect with twenty-two minutes gone.
Just two minutes later City were awarded a penalty. Hugo Lloris brought down Sterling with a wild challenge. Ilkay Gundogan stepped up and calmly slotted home the spot kick.
Spurs then seemingly out of nowhere pulled a goal back just before the break. Christian Eriksen’s initial shot was saved by Ederson but the ball fell straight back to the Dane who made no mistake from close range. 2-1 and Spurs were back in the game with forty-two minutes played.
2-1 the score at half-time with the game in the balance after Eriksen’s goal.
Tottenham started the second half well but were struggling to create any real chances.
After a shocking miss, moments earlier, Sterling grabbed City’s third goal of the game. The Englishmen reacted quickest after Loris parried a shot, to smash the ball high into the net. 3-1 the score after seventy-two minutes.
Spurs looked to find a way back into the game but the City backdoor remained firmly closed.
3-1 the final score as City edge closer to the title.
