Manchester United are set to announce former Bafana Bafana star Quinton Fortune alongside Neil Wood as the new U23 managers, according to reports in the UK.
The club has been looking to replace Ricky Sbragia, who left the role in May, and UK reports suggest that former teammate to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at Old Trafford in Fortune and former academy product Wood will both take charge of the role.
The 42-year-old Fortune was assistant manager of Cardiff City’s U21 side during Solskjaer’s time in charge of the first team and has had stints with Bafana Bafana under Stuart Baxter.
The South African made 126 appearances for United under Sir Alex Ferguson and has remained a popular figure at the club working as a club ambassador and pundit on MUTV.
Wood, 36, never made a senior appearance but represented United’s reserve team as a player before leaving for Coventry City in 2004 and later played for Oldham Athletic. He returned to United in September 2014 as an academy coach after being impressive in a similar role at Aston Villa.
Wood and Fortune’s appointment continue United’s push to bring back former players to the club in an attempt to build a single philosophy from top to bottom.
