Manchester United will finish the 2017-18 Premier League campaign in second place after playing to a 0-0 draw with West Ham United at the London Stadium on Thursday night.
The clash got off to a cagey start with neither side wanting to make mistakes in the opening exchanges. West Ham had the first effort on target in the seventh minute, but Marko Arnautovic’s shot was easily saved.
United gradually eased into their rhythm and were unfortunate not to take the lead four minutes later after a good spell of play saw Alexis Sanchez pick out Ander Herrera, but the Spaniard’s effort from outside the box didn’t bother goalkeeper Adrian.
The shot-stopper was called into action in the 23rd minute and produced a fine double save in quick succession to keep out efforts from Sanchez and Luke Shaw.
The remainder of the first half saw a fierce midfield battle being ensued, which resulted in little goalmouth action as the two teams went into the half-time break deadlocked at 0-0.
United upped their tempo in the second stanza and came agonisingly close to taking the lead after the break, but Jesse Lingard squandered an easy chance. It became a matter of when for the visitors with Paul Pogba dictating terms in the midfield.
West Ham signalled their intent to score and made the first change of the game as Andy Carrol replaced Arthur Masuaku. This prompted United to reply with a change of their own as Marcus Rashford was sent on to replace Lingard.
Arnautovic should have given his side the lead with 10 minutes left to play after being put through on goal by Mark Noble; however, the striker fluffed his effort.
In the end, neither side were able to find the back of the net and the two teams were forced to share the spoils.
