SoccerClub selects the Premier League Team of the Week as Alexandre Lacazette stars in Arsenal’s mauling of Fulham, while Eden Hazard continues his domination of the EPL, writes DEAN WORKMAN.
Formation 4-4-2
Goalkeeper: Rui Patricio (Wolves)
The Portuguese international played a big role in his side’s 1-0 win over Crystal Palace. Patricio made a number of saves to deny the Eagles as Wolves have now picked up four clean sheets in their last five Premier League outings.
Right back: Matt Doherty (Wolves)
The Republic of Ireland defender has been one of Wolves’ breakout stars this season. Doherty has offered his team a defensive strength in his wing-back role while also providing a constant threat in attack. Doherty showcased these qualities as he scored the only goal of the game to guide his team to a 1-0 win over Crystal Palace.
Centre back: Davinson Sanchez (Tottenham Hotspur)
The Colombian defender was in fine form over the weekend as he played a vital part in his side’s 1-0 win over Cardiff City. Sanchez was a rock at the back using his strength and pace to snuff out any attack, while he also showed his strength in the opposition box as his header was swept in by Eric Dier following a corner.
Centre back: Aymeric Laporte (Manchester City)
The French defender was superb for City as he helped shut out a dangerous Liverpool front line in their 0-0 draw. Laporte read the game fantastically and also offered calmness and composure with the ball at his feet.
Left back: Benjamin Mendy (Manchester City)
Returning from an injury, the French defender had to contain his usual attacking nature to deal with the threat provided by Liverpool’s front three and Mohamed Salah in particular. Mendy has been very impressive offensively this season but showed his defensive qualities at Anfield to help his side earn a point.
Right midfield: Anthony Martial (Manchester United)
It may have taken the Frenchman and his teammates an entire half to start playing after going 2-0 down, but Martial played a pivotal role in the stunning comeback. The wing won the free kick for Juan Mata’s goal before latching on to a Paul Pogba flick to fire United level. Jose Mourinho’s men eventually went on to snatch a late winner, but had Martial to thank for being in that position.
Centre midfield: Ross Barkley (Chelsea)
The former Everton man put in arguably his best ever performance in a Chelsea shirt against Southampton. Barkley won the ball and played through Hazard for the opener before getting on the end of Olivier Giroud’s cut back to grab the second and his first league goal for the Blues.
Centre midfield: Gylfi Sigurdsson (Everton)
The Icelandic midfielder continued his stunning run of form with yet another match-winning display, this time in the 2-1 win over Leicester City. Sigurdsson not only scored the winner, but he was Everton’s most influential player, taking more shots and playing more key passes than any other player on the pitch.
Left midfield: Eden Hazard (Chelsea)
On current form, the Belgian wing is arguably the best player in the league. Hazard highlighted that by putting in yet another astonishing display against Southampton. The forward opened the scoring for his side and remained a constant threat throughout the encounter before eventually providing the assist for Alvaro Moratta’s late goal in the 3-0 win.
Striker: Callum Wilson (Bournemouth)
The striker continued his good early season form as he starred in Bournemouth’s 4-0 thrashing of Watford. Wilson provided the assist for the first and third goals before rounding off the scoring with a goal of his own.
Striker: Alexandre Lacazette (Arsenal)
The Frenchman has been a big part of Arsenal’s stunning run of six league wins in a row and continued to be influential in the 5-1 thrashing of Fulham. Lacazette scored the opener, before an Andre Schurrle goal levelled the scores. The striker then produced a moment of magic with a stunning strike from range to restore Arsenal’s lead before the Gunners ran riot by scoring another three to move within touching distance of the Premier League’s table-toppers.
