Mohamed Salah of Liverpool takes on Ashley Young of Manchester United

SoccerClub selects the Premier League Team of the Week as a Manchester United trio star in their win over Liverpool and David Silva shines, writes DEAN WORKMAN.

Team of the Week formation: 4-5-1

Goalkeeper: Lukasz Fabianski (Swansea City)

Swansea City stopper, Fabianski, put in a standout performance to keep a clean sheet and lead a 10-man Swansea to a vital 0-0 away draw at relegation rivals Huddersfield United. The Polish keeper pulled off a number of quality saves throughout the game to ensure that the Swans picked up a crucial point.

Right Back: Serge Aurier (Tottenham Hotspurs)

The Ivorian was in imperious form for Tottenham this weekend as he had a hand in two of the four goals during a 4-1 come-from-behind victory for Mauricio Potchetino’s men against Bournemouth. He provided a pinpoint cross to Dele Alli for the Spurs equaliser before his rampaging runs – which caused Eddie Howe’s men problems all day – paid further dividends as he rounded off the scoring late on. A ball into the box was palmed by Asmir Begovic straight to the feet of the former PSG man, who had a tap in to make it 4-1.

Centre Back: Shkodran Mustafi (Arsenal)

The German may have copped a lot of criticism over the last few weeks as his Arsenal side have endured a torrid time but both the Gunners and Mustafi bounced back this weekend in a 3-0 win over Watford. Not only was the defender a rock at the back but he was also a threat at set plays as he opened the scoring for Arsenal with a well-placed header from a Mesut Ozil corner.

Centre Back: Chris Smalling (Manchester United)

The Englishman played an integral role in Jose Mourinho’s tactical masterplan which stopped Liverpool’s inform attack. Despite conceding an Eric Bailly own goal, Mourinho’s men were hardly troubled in their 2-1 win over their close rivals. Smalling pulled off four blocks during the game – a league-high – and was essential to United’s organisation throughout.

Left Back: Ashley Young (Manchester United)

Young came up against the league’s in-form player in Mohammed Salah this weekend. The Englishman was excellent for his side performing in a manner that not many defenders have been able to when coming up against the Egyptian and of course Liverpool’s other attacking threats this season. Young’s positioning and reading of the game were second to none as his side edged their rivals 2-1 at Old Trafford.

Right Midfield: Heung-Min Son (Tottenham Hotspurs)

For the second time in two weeks, the South Korean has made this team of the week. Another superb performance from the midfielder helped his side to a 4-1 victory over Bournemouth. When Harry Kane was taken off early due to injury, it was Son who stepped up in the striker’s absence. The Korean scored not one but two goals to lead his side to an impressive victory.

Centre Midfield: David Silva (Manchester City)
The Spanish maestro was in sublime form this past week as City secured a routine 2-0 victory over Stoke City. Silva opened the scoring early by converting a Raheem Sterling cross. The midfielder then got his second goal just after the restart as he played a brilliant one-two with Gabriel Jesus and nudged the ball past an outrushing Jack Butland.

Centre Midfield: Henrikh Mkhitaryan (Arsenal)

Arsenal got back to winning ways in the Premier League this weekend and it was largely down to Mkhitaryan’s excellent display as his goal and assist saw the Gunner beat Watford 3-0. The Armenian played a deft through ball to Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang for Arsenal’s second and then rounded off the scoring with a neat finish – this time Aubameyang was the provider.

Centre Midfield: Jonjo Shelvey (Newcastle United)

The Englishman played a starring role for Newcastle United in their 3-0 victory over Southampton. In a must-win game for the Magpies, Shelvey came up with two quality assists as he ran the game from midfield for Rafael Benítez’s men.

Left Midfield: Marcus Rashford (Manchester United)

Making his first Premier League start in 2018, Marcus Rashford blew Liverpool away with a sensational double in Manchester United’s 2-1 over Jurgen Klopp’s men. The Englishman’s pace and trickery proved too much for the Liverpool defence to handle. United were under clear tactical instructions which Rashford performed diligently. Not once but twice did the young attacker react quickest to a second ball and on both occasions, he punished the Liverpool defence by scoring.

Striker: Chris Wood (Burnley)

Burnley’s fine 3-0 victory over West Ham United at the London Stadium may have been overshadowed by crowd trouble but that won’t stop two-goal hero Wood from making the team of the week. The striker scored Sean Dyce’s sides second and third goals of the game putting an impressive all-round performance to lead his team to victory.
