Maritzburg United are set to welcome Platinum Stars to the Harry Gwala Stadium when the two sides meet in the Telkom Knockout Cup on Friday.
This will be the second-ever meeting between Maritzburg United and Platinum Stars in the Telkom Knockout competition.
The teams also clashed in the 2013 tournament when Stars triumphed 2-0 at home in the first round. Henrico Botes and Robert Ng’ambi were on target for them as they went on to lift the trophy that year.
The sides clashed that same season in the FA Cup, but this time it was United who came out on top as they won a penalty shoot-out 3-1 after the match had finished 1-1. That was also played at Stars and is the only other cup game between the two sides.
In all, the teams have met on 25 previous occasions in all competitions. Stars have 11 wins to six for United, with a further eight games drawn. Stars have outscored their opponents 30-21.
Stars also hold the advantage in matches played at United. In the 11 previous games, they have won five to United’s three, with three games drawn. They have outscored their opponents 13-11.
That being said, Stars have not won any of the last seven meetings between the two sides. In that time there have been three United wins and four draws. Stars’ last success came in a league clash in March 2014.
United have already beaten Stars this season away from home. The pair clashed in a league game on August 20, and goals from Deolin Mekoa and Lebohang Maboe sealed victory for the KwaZulu-Natal side.
United coach Fadlu Davids is a former player with Stars, making 22 starts in two spells, though he managed just a single goal.
Maritzburg United against Platinum Stars kicks off at 20:00.
