Manchester United faced Southampton in their second Premier League match of the season on Friday evening, with Paul Pogba making his debut in a 2-0 victory.
Mega signing Pogba – United’s new world record superstar – started the match in the centre of midfield for the Red Devils as both sides settled quickly.
The first chance, appropriately, fell to the Frenchman fired a snapshot straight at the goalkeeper from a tight angle after 13 minutes.
Southhampton had their first real chance when a Nathan Redmond cross came within inches of finding Dusan Tadic in the box five minutes later, with the Serbian millimetres away from making contact. Shane Long then hit the side netting following a quick turn with 25 minutes gone.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic came close with an acrobatic effort for United near the half-hour mark before Long wasted a glorious chance for the Saints as he mishit his shot having been played through on goal.
Southampton were made to pay after 36 minutes as Ibrahimovic powered home a header following great work from Wayne Rooney on the wing. The goal proved the difference between at the interval.
The second-half began with a goal being disallowed for the Saints before Anthony Martial had a shot well saved. But just a few minutes later Luke Shaw was awarded a penalty after his heels were clipped in the box. Ibrahimovic stepped up and duly slotted home.
Southampton had a chance on the break around the hour mark following a mistake from Ibrahimovic but the attack came to nothing. Martial then had a great chance in the 65th minute but had his shot blocked at the last possible moment.
Long came close with an angled header in the 75th minute but with the game winding down there were no further clear-cut chances. As the game came to a close the score remained 2-0 in favour of United.
