Peter Shalulile scored his 113th goal in South African football last week to move to within just 10 of Siyabonga Nomvethe’s all-time Premier Soccer League record as Mamelodi Sundowns head to Cape Town City on Sunday.

The Namibia international scored late on in the 3-0 victory over Cape Town Spurs that maintains The Brazilians’ 100% start to the season with an 11th victory in a row.

It is his ninth goal of the campaign in all competitions as he closes in on Nomvethe’s top mark, which could yet be beaten this season.

Usually if a striker is scoring as frequently as Shalulile in South African football they move to Europe – as we saw with the likes of Collins Mbesuma and Knowledge Musona in the past.

But the fact that Sundowns have held onto their top marksman, who is now 30 and unlikely to move overseas at this stage of his career unless it is to the Middle East, has given him a shot at the record.

His 113 goals have come in 210 starts for Highlands Park and Sundowns, but his record since joining The Brazilians is much better. He has 84 goals in 132 starts. No forward can match that rate.

If you take all his goals in South African football, which includes in the second-tier with Highlands Park, Shalulile already has 133 in all competitions.
