Stellenbosch FC became the 25^th club in South Africa to win one of the three major cup trophies when they defeated TS Galaxy on penalties in the final of the Carling Cup in Durban on Saturday.

Galaxy already appeared on the list following their shock 2019 Nedbank Cup final win over Kaizer Chiefs, with Stellenbosch having now added their names with a single cup win too, along with the likes of Durban Bush Bucks, TTM, Vaal Professionals and, perhaps most shockingly, AmaZulu.

That fact that Usuthu have just a single major cup success in their history shows the underachievement from the side.

Nine clubs in all have a single cup win to their name, with the others being Baroka FC, Dynamos and Lamontville Golden Arrows.

Of those, it is only Golden Arrows whose single success came in the MTN8. For the others it is the Carling Knockout (5) and Nedbank Cup (3).

Only three clubs have reached double figures for domestic trophies won and it will be no surprise to hear their names.

Mamelodi Sundowns have 14 trophies (and counting), while Orlando Pirates have 21.

But head and shoulders above the rest are Chiefs, whose 41 domestic cup wins is almost double that of their Soweto rivals in second place.

The caveat to that, of course, is that Chiefs have not won a trophy of any kind for coming on nine years, the longest barren run in their history. In that time Pirates have won four cup trophies and Sundowns five.

The next highest outside of the so-called big three are SuperSport United (nine cup wins), BidVest Wits (eight) and Moroka Swallows (eight).
Swallows have never won what is now the Carling Knockout though, with three victories in the MTN8 and five in the Nedbank Cup.
