Arsenal threw away a two-goal lead in an entertaining 2-2 draw against Liverpool at Anfield in the Premier League on Sunday evening.

The team led by Mikel Arteta is now six points ahead of City at the top of the table, but the reigning champions are still in control of the title.

City has a game in hand and will play Arsenal later this month at the Etihad.

With goals from Gabriel Martinelli and Gabriel Jesus, it looked like Arsenal would win their eighth straight league game in a row.

But Mohamed Salah scored a goal for Liverpool just before halftime to start a comeback.

Salah missed a penalty in the second half, but Roberto Firmino tied the game with three minutes left.

The team of Jurgen Klopp then missed a number of chances to finish the comeback, and Aaron Ramsdale, the custodian for Arsenal, saved a point for his team.

But the match will also be remembered for an amazing thing that happened right after halftime. Assistant referee Constantine Hatzidakis put his elbow in the face of Liverpool left-back Andy Robertson.

Even though Arsenal had a perfect start to the season, they still haven’t won a league game on the road against Liverpool since 2012. This is one of the biggest things that stands between them and the title.

It only took the visitors eight minutes to get on the board. Bukayo Saka broke through the Liverpool defence, and when the ball fell to Martinelli, he poked it past his Brazilian teammate Alisson Becker.

Only a huge miss from Jesus and a great save by Alisson to stop Oleksandr Zinchenko kept Arsenal from being out of sight in the first 15 minutes.

The drop in form of Virgil van Dijk has been a big reason why Liverpool has gone from being close to an unprecedented quadruple last season to being stuck in the middle of the table.

The Dutch center-back was caught off guard when Jesus headed in Martinelli’s cross to give Arsenal a 2-0 lead at the 28-minute mark.

But signs of a youthful side going for their first title finally showed once Salah halved the arrears three minutes before half-time.

Liverpool could even have been level by the break as Jordan Henderson blazed another big chance over.

But that was just the beginning of the drama. As the players left the pitch for halftime, assistant referee Hatzidakis elbowed Robertson.

This got Liverpool fired up, and they came out strong in the second half. Diogo Jota was brought down by Rob Holding, which gave Liverpool a great chance to tie the game, but Salah missed the penalty.

Salah almost made up for it a few minutes later, but Ramsdale made a great save to keep his team in the lead. Nine minutes from the end, the England goalkeeper was needed again to stop a one-on-one with Darwin Nunez.

Firmino finally made Liverpool’s pressure count when he headed home Trent Alexander-cross Arnold’s to set up a great finish.

Salah missed a great chance, and Ramsdale made incredible saves from the Egyptian and Ibrahima Konate to keep Arsenal in the game.

But Liverpool’s comeback may not be enough, either on the day or for their chances of playing in the Champions League next year.

Since their amazing 7-0 win over Manchester United last month, the Reds haven’t won any of their last five games.

Liverpool is still in eighth place, 12 points behind the top four teams.
