Australia overcame a spirited New Zealand after clinching a five-run victory to extend their Cricket World Cup winning streak to four games in Dharamsala.

Australia scored 388 runs before being out. Travis Head scored 109 runs and David Warner scored 81.

Rachin Ravindra scored 116 runs for New Zealand, Daryl Mitchell added 54 runs, and Jimmy Neesham’s 33-ball fifty set off the late fireworks.

New Zealand needed 19 runs in the last over, which took place in the shadow of the Himalayas.

Before Mitchell Starc threw five wides, Trent Boult ran for a single.

It was Neesham who scored six runs off the next three balls. He was one of the stars of the 2019 final, which New Zealand lost to England.

But when he tried to hit another two, Marnus Labuschagne’s fine throw from the fence got him out.

That meant Lockie Ferguson, who hurt his Achilles on the pitch, had to do something amazing with the last ball.

Starc hit the ball full length, but Ferguson could only push it to the covers. This left the Kiwis stuck on 383-9.

With four wins and two losses each, both teams were in good shape to make it to the semi-finals.

Head hit his fourth one-day international hundred off 59 balls, with 10 fours and 6 sixes. It was his first game of the tournament after missing the last few because of a broken hand.

The 29-year-old got to 50 off of 28 balls and then took advantage of being dropped on 70 and 75.

Off-spinner Glenn Phillips finally bowled him out clean, and Australia was 206-2 at the halfway point.

Head and Warner put together 175 runs in the first 20 overs before Warner was bowled.

Warner, who turned 37 on Friday, was trying to get his third hundred in a row, but Phillips caught him off-balance and out for 81.

Phillips then bowled Steve Smith out for 18 runs, giving him his best bowling figures of 3-37 for his career. Mitchell Santner then joined in the fun.

Mitchell Marsh (36) was caught by Santner, and the left-armer then bowled Labuschagne (18) out after the batsman was dropped on one.

Glenn Maxwell, a middle-order danger man, was caught at long-off by Trent Boult for 41 runs off 24 balls.

Maxwell had just scored a World Cup record 100 off of just 40 balls against the Netherlands.

Josh Inglis quickly got to 38 off of 28 balls, and he and captain Pat Cummins put on 62 for the seventh wicket.

New Zealand, who came in second place in the last two World Cups, scored first. Will Young (32) and Devon Conway (28) put together 61 runs before Josh Hazlewood bowled them both out.

Mitchell got his third fifty of the tournament after getting 130 against India in the last game. But he was out on 54 when leg-spinner Adam Zampa caught him holing out to long-on with his team on 168-3 after 24 overs.

Mitchell and Ravindra put on 96 runs for the third wicket.

Ravindra, who is 23 years old, scored 123 runs in the first game’s win over England. He hit 10 runs in 77 balls, including seven fours and five sixes.

But with 60 balls to go, New Zealand needed 97 runs to win, and Pat Cummins, the Australian captain, caught Ravindra in the deep for 116.

The Kiwis were now down 293-6, but they fought hard to make the game exciting all the way to the last over.
