Banyana Banyana have been awarded R2.4-million in bonuses by the South African Football Association (Safa) for the team’s performance at the 2018 Africa Women Cup of Nations (Awcon).
Desiree Ellis’ team finished as runners-up in Ghana after losing in a penalty shoot-out to Nigeria, but qualified for Fifa Women’s World Cup for the very first time with the second-place finish.
Banyana will now take their place at the global showpiece event in France next year.
Safa had met with the players before they left for Ghana, where they confirmed a bonus structure for the players, supported by sponsors Sasol.

The football association confirmed the bonuses paid, amounting to R2 415 000, will be shared ‘exclusively by the 21 players’ who participated at the tournament.
The historic run in the Afwcon saw the profile of the women’s game seriously rise in South African, and they were rewarded when a cheque was handed over by president Danny Jordaan to captain Janine van Wyk upon the team’s arrival.
