Cape Town Spurs gained promotion to the DStv Premiership following their goalless draw against Maritzburg United in their final playoffs clash at the Harry Gwala Stadium on Wednesday evening.
The game got off to a relatively even start with both teams trying to find their rhythm in the opening stages of the match.
Both teams were playing with caution given the magnitude of this match and neither Spurs nor Maritzburg were able to muster any goal-threatening chances on either side.
Maritzburg had a chance to go into the break with the lead in the 45th minute but Bradley Cross had his shot punched away by Spurs goalkeeper Lincoln Vyver as the game went into the break locked at goalless.
The home side came out with intent in the second half and nearly took the lead two minutes in but Cross failed to redeem his miss in the first half as he saw his header sail just over the crossbar.
Spurs had their first real opportunity at goal in the 52nd minute but Cohen Stander blazed his effort beyond the goal with his powerful effort.
It was end-to-end excitement after the hour mark as Asenele Velebayi made his way to the edge of the area only to be despatched off the ball setting Maritzburg on the counter with Ali Meza playing a teasing cross into the box but nobody could get on to the end of it.
United pushed forward in the closing stages of the game to secure the win that would see them return to the top-flight but Spurs held their nerve to grind our a goalless draw to secure their promotion to the DStv Premiership.
