Kaizer Chiefs have confirmed the appointment of Bafana Bafana legend Shaun Bartlett as the club’s assistant coach to Ernst Middendorp.

The former Amakhosi forward takes over from Patrick Mabedi after putting pen to paper on a two and a half year contract with immediate effect.

Bartlett is no stranger to the club, having played for the Glamour Boys between 2006 and 2008 under Middendorp.

During his spell at the club, Bartlett helped the club secure the 2006 SAA Supa 8, as well as the 2007 Telkom Knockout Cup. He has a vast experience playing for the likes of Switzerland’s FC Zürich and England’s Charlton Athletic.

He also formed part of the legendary Bafana Bafana squad that won the 1996 Africa Cup of Nations, and has been capped 74 times for the South African national team, while scoring 29 goals in the process.

On a coaching note, Bartlett gained valuable coaching experience when he guided Golden Arrows back to the Absa Premiership in 2015, while also coaching National First Division side AmaTuks for the last two seasons.

Bartlett has most recently assisted Bafana Bafana coach Stuart Baxter during their exploits in the African Cup of Nations (Afcon).

‘Shaun played under Middendorp at Chiefs,’ commented club chairman Kaizer Motaung on Bartlett’s appointment.

‘We were looking for somebody with a stature at the coaching level. His technical understanding matched the profile we were looking for.

‘He will bring with him a lot of international experience gained during his years playing in the US, Switzerland and England. We wish Shaun all the best in this new role at the club.’
