Kaizer Chiefs advanced to the last 16 of the Nedbank Cup after securing a comfortable 3-0 victory over Golden Arrows at the FNB Stadium on Sunday afternoon, writes DYLAN APPOLIS.
Amakhosi got off to a great start and nearly opened the scoring after seven minutes when Willard Katsande produced the first attempt at goal, but the midfielder failed to guide his header towards the target.
Maximilian Mbaeva came to his side’s rescue six minutes later when he made a great save to deny Leonardo Castro’s effort at goal, as the scoreline remained goalless.
Arrows were dealt a major blow in the 18th minute as Kudakwashe Mahachi was forced off the field through injury, and was subsequently replaced by Nduduzo Sibiya.
Knox Mutizwa nearly broke the deadlock seven minutes before half-time, but his strike from distance was well saved by Itumeleng Khune.
The match went into the half-time interval with the scoreline locked at 0-0.
The Glamour Boys came out with more intent in the second half and broke the deadlock in the 53rd minute when Ryan Moon latched on to Katsande’s cross before steering the ball into the net to make it 1-0.
Mzwandile Buthelezi nearly put the ball in his own net after trying to clear Joseph Molangoane’s ball into the area.
Khune came to his side’s rescue when he produced a superb save to keep out Mutizwa’s effort from close range.
Substitute Bernard Parker doubled his side’s lead with 10 minutes left to play when he tapped the ball into the back of the net from a rebounded Mbaeva save.
Yusuf Jappie should’ve reduced the deficit at the other end, but the striker’s header was well saved by Khune between the sticks for Amakhosi.
Molangoane all but sealed the victory in the 84th minute when he rounded off the scoring to guide Amakhosi into the last 16 of the the Nedbank Cup.
