Kaizer Chiefs fought back to earn a point after they held champions Mamelodi Sundowns to a 1-1 draw in the DStv Premiership at the FNB Stadium on Sunday evening.

The Brazilians got off to a bright start and had the first chance at goal in the third minute but Aubrey Modiba blazed his effort wide of the target.

Amakhosi had a chance of their own a minute later but Keagan Dolly fired his powerful effort against the side netting.

The home side had a golden opportunity to take the lead in the eighth minute when Leonardo Castro squared the ball into the box to find Khama Billiat, who guided his effort over the crossbar.

Gaston Sirino had a great chance to hand Sundowns the lead in the 22nd minute but the attacker curled his effort just wide of the target.

Bruce Bvuma came to his side’s rescue in the 35th minute when he made a brilliant point-blank range save to deny Peter Shalulile’s header at goal.

Both sides pressed forward in the closing stages of the first half but neither side could find the back of the net as the game went into the half time break locked at goalless.

Sundowns came out guns blazing in the second half as they managed to take an early lead through Modiba, who volleyed his effort into the bottom corner to make it 1-0.

Chiefs had a chance to level matters in the 53rd minute but Reyaad Pieterse made a fantastic save to deny Billait a scoring opportunity.

Themba Zwane should have doubled Sundown’s lead in the 72nd minute but the Sundowns attacker dragged his effort wide of goal from outside the box.

Amakhosi eventually levelled matter four minutes later when Phathutshedzo Nange latched on to a floated ball in the area before he volleyed his effort into the back of the net to make it 1-1.

Chiefs were then awarded a penalty in the 83rd minute after a late challenge on Sekgota. Dolly stepped up to take the penalty but had his spot kick saved by Pietersen, who also managed to save Dolly’s rebound.

The home side had a chance to win the match in stoppage time but Pietersen made a goalline save to deny Nurkovic after he was played in by Billiat.

Neither side were able to find the winning goal after 90 minute as both sides shared the spoils at the FNB Stadium.
