Kaizer Chiefs humbled Mamelodi Sundowns in the Shell Helix Ultra Cup after claiming a 4-2 victory at the FNB Stadium on Saturday, writes DYLAN APPOLIS.

Ernst Middendorp’s side came into this clash after a recent 2-0 victory over Golden Arrows in their last Absa Premiership match.

Meanwhile, Pitso Mosimane’s men played out to a 2-1 win over a stubborn Black Leopards side in their league encounter.

The last time the sides met in this competition Sundowns claimed bragging rights after securing a 2-1 victory over Amakhosi through goals from Jeremy Brockie and Themba Zwane.

Amakhosi got off to the perfect start and took the lead as early as the eighth minute when Leonardo Castro placed the ball in the net after Khama Billiat’s initial shot hit the upright.

The Glamour Boys dominated proceedings after 15 minutes of play while Sundowns were struggling to carve out any real chances at goal.

Daniel Akpeyi came to his side’s rescue in the 25th minute when he produced a good save to keep out Lyle Lakay’s venomous free kick.

Chiefs then doubled their lead five minutes later after Castro found the net with a close-range finish.

Sundowns nearly responded moments later but Sammy Seabi’s shot short from range was kept out by Akpeyi.

Mosimane was forced into making a change with two minutes left before the break as Oupa Manyisa was forced off due to injury and subsequently replaced by captain Hlompho Kekana.

Lebogang Manyama had a chance to extend Chiefs’ lead even further but was unable to direct his shot on target as it sailed over the bar.

Castro completed his hat-trick and Chiefs’ third goal in stoppage time when he nodded the ball home at the far corner before Billiat made it 4-0 after turning home a cross from Castro.

Chiefs managed to take a comfortable four-goal lead over Sundowns into the break.

Sundowns came out better in the second half and nearly reduced the deficit after 56 minutes, but Jose Ali Meza sent his effort from the edge of the box wide of goal.

Meza made up for this four minutes later and pulled a goal back for Sundowns after slotting the ball home from close range.

Akpeyi was called into action in the 66th minute when Lakay unleashed a strike from the edge of the area but the Amakhosi did well to keep his effort out.

Meza continued to cause the Chiefs defence problems after 74 minutes, but the Sundowns attacker was unable to find the target with his shot from a tight angle.

Sundowns had a great opportunity to grab their second goal in the 80th minute but Sphelele Mkhulise failed to convert his effort from close range.

Keletso Sifama should have extended Chiefs’ lead with a minute left to play but blazed his effort inches wide of the target.

The Brazilians were then awarded a penalty in stoppage time when Lakay was brought down after Akpeyi tried to clear the ball. Sirino stepped up and made the spot kick count.

However, Chiefs held on to their lead over Sundowns until the final whistle to claim bragging rights at the FNB Stadium.
