Kaizer Chiefs extended their winning run in the Absa Premiership to seven games after claiming a comfortable 4-0 victory over Stellenbosch FC at Cape Town Stadium on Wednesday evening, reports DYLAN APPOLIS.
Stellies failed to secure a win in their last two league encounters after playing out to a goalless draw with Highlands Park at Cape Town Stadium on 9 November.
Meanwhile, Amakhosi went into this clash on a six-game winning run with their most recent victory in the league coming against rivals Orlando Pirates, securing a 3-2 win at the FNB Stadium on 9 November.
The Glamour Boys got off to a good start and nearly opened the scoring in the seventh minute, but Khama Billiat blazed his effort over the target.
Chiefs made up for their earlier miss and took the lead three minutes later when Siyabonga Ngezana slotted the ball home from close range.
Amakhosi nearly doubled their lead in the 21st minute but Lebogang Manyama failed to capitalise on Moroole’s mistake in a dangerous area.
The visitors did eventually make it 2-0 when Samir Nurkovic nodded the ball home from a resulting corner.
Billiat should’ve added a third six minutes before the break, but saw his first-time volley crash against the side netting.
Amakhosi held on to their two-goal lead over Stellenbosch as they went into the break.
Chiefs were forced to make an early change in the second half when Billiat was stretchered off the field due to injury and subsequently replaced by Dumisani Zuma.
Nurkovic nearly claimed his second goal in the 58th minute when picked out by Manyama, but the Chiefs striker placed his header wide of goal.
Ernst Middendorp made his second substitution in the 65th minute when Siphosakhe Ntiya-Ntiya came on to replace Bernard Parker.
Nurkovic should have extended his side’s lead four minutes later when he cut on to his right before curling his effort over the upright.
Waseem Iscaas had a chance to pull a goal back for the hosts in the 71st minute, but the Stellies forward failed to round Daniel Akpeyi, who put the ball out for a corner.
Amakhosi’s persistence paid off and was rewarded with a third goal four minutes later when Nurkovic headed the ball over De Jong after Zuma’s initial effort was saved.
Zuma had a chance to put the game to bed in the 85th minute but saw his effort sail inches over the crossbar.
Middendorp opted to bring on a fresh pair of legs with four minutes left to play when Kearyn Baccus was taken off and replaced by Philani Zulu.
The visitors then made it 4-0 late in stoppage time when Zuma rounded off the scoring with a neat finish from close range.
Amakhosi held on to their lead over Stellenbosch until the final whistle to claim all three points away from home.
