Cape Town City will lock horns with Premier League leaders Mamelodi Sundowns after the draw was concluded in Cape Town on Thursday night, writes MARSHALL GOUTS.

After edging National First Division outfit Royal Eagles in the last round, Maritzburg United were pitted against Bloemfontein Celtic, who overcame SuperSport United and Richards Bay.

After claiming the scalps of Polokwane City and AmaZulu, this year’s giant-killers Ubuntu Cape Town were handed another Premier League side in Free State Stars. El La Koto secured their passage to the quarter-finals after seeing off Platinum Stars and Chippa United.

The biggest fixture of the round sees Benni McCarthy’s Cape Town City host Absa Premiership leaders Mamelodi Sundowns.

The Citizens have already endured a tough journey thus far in defeating Bidvest Wits and Orlando Pirates, while Sundowns arguably had an easier route in defeating second and third-tier outfits, Cape Town All Stars and EC Bees, respectively.

Kaizer Chiefs booked their spot in the quarters following victories against Golden Arrows and Stellenbosch FC; however, Amakhosi’s passage to the semi-finals won’t be that easy as they face fellow Premier League outfit Baroka.

Bakgaga are no strangers to Chiefs, especially in this competition, having caused a major upset to knock them out of the tournament at the same stage in 2011.
